SALEM — About 340 workers returned Monday to American Standard after ending their strike last Friday.

Tracy Benson Kirker, a spokesperson for the company said that returning to work today went smoothly and as planned and there were no incidents.”

Salem police had no reports of any problems as the workers returned.

Workers accepted a company plan that calls for wage and other concessions.

The United Steel Workers of America Local 1538 is pursuing an unfair labor practice against the company despite the return. The union is contending the company made its proposal and did not negotiate.

Canfield trustees to meet

CANFIELD — The township trustees will have a special meeting today. The meeting, which will be an executive session to discuss personnel matters and other business, will be at 1:20 p.m. in the Township Hall on South Broad Street.

Man killed cleaning gun

GREENVILLE, Pa. — A Greenville man was killed when his gun accidentally went off while he was cleaning it.

Mercer County Deputy Coroner John Libonati said John McMarlin Jr., 78, of Main Street, was found Friday by a family member in his basement workshop. He was pronounced dead at his home at 7:50 p.m.

The cause of death was an accidental gunshot wound to the chest, Libonati said.

Truck, copper stolen

SHARON, Pa. — A truck and flat-bed trailer and its cargo of 45,000 pounds of copper plates were stolen from the 100 block of Dock Street, police reported.

The truck, owned by Peter Fuchs of West Middlesex, was stolen sometime between 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:10 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Police said Fuchs had started the truck up Saturday and left it running overnight.

Financial planning scheduled for Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN — Everlife Worship Center, 474 Early Road, will sponsor a Financial Peace University, a 13-week program taught by Dave Ramsey of Nashville. Sessions will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the center.

The program teaches participants how to handle their money through common-sense principles and small-group accountability. Saving emergency money, budgeting, buying bargains, understanding insurance and investments, retirement and college planning, mortgages and second jobs will be discussed.

Concert recordings

YOUNGSTOWN — Protestant Family Service, located in Millcreek Community Center, 496 Glenwood Ave., is taking orders for a CD and DVD of the Joyful Noise Concert that was held Nov. 9 at Wickcliffe Presbyterian Church in Austintown.

About 170 attended the event, which raised $1,000 for the private social service agency. The CD and DVD are $10 each; you can get both for $15. Call the PFS office at (330) 746-4600.

Park board to plant tree

NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township Park Board has announced plans to plant a tree in the stage area of Woodworth Park to recognize township resident Ed Wright for his service as volunteer firefighter.

Wright had served the township fire department for more than 35 years before retiring earlier this year. He also was active with the township recycling department.

The tree will be marked with a plaque bearing his name and years of service.

Sexual assault reported

WARREN — Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault at an area nursing home.

An employee at White Oak Manor on SE Ridge Avenue told police she was informed that a 32-year-old female at the facility had been sexually assaulted. No further information was available.

Police reports said all information had been turned over to detectives investigating the case.

Food store robbed

WARREN — Police are investigating a Sunday afternoon robbery.

According to police reports, a 20-year-old man and a friend were at the Warren Food Mart on W. Market Street just after 2 p.m. when a man asked them if they wanted to buy marijuana. The Cortland man let the would-be drug seller into his car and took him to the Hampshire House Apartments where the man produced a handgun and robbed the two friends. The man ran to one of the buildings in the complex after the robbery.

YOUNGSTOWN — Bethel Church of God in Christ, 3147 Glenwood Ave., will have a food giveaway at 9:30 a.m. today. Those who come to get the free food should bring bags and identification.
