Mooney’s Simon named Ohio player of the year

Cardinal Mooney High senior defensive lineman John Simon, who led the Cardinals to an 9-3 record and will play at Ohio State, was named defensive player of the year in Division IV by The Associated Press Tuesday.

Simon was one of four players to share the player of the year honor, and one of 21 players from the area to be named first- or second-team. Twenty-one more were named special mention in balloting by media members around the state.

Simon was the only local player to earn player of the year recognition.
