Mooney, Ursuline students show their spirit for the holiday season

staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — Students in the city’s two Catholic high schools are doing their part to help provide food for families who need assistance this holiday season.

Cardinal Mooney High School students spent this month collecting food and staples to provide Thanksgiving meals for 20 area families.

The Interact Club at Ursuline High School, with the help of Youngstown Rotary, held a schoolwide food drive for 12 families residing at Beatitude House.

Mooney’s Christian Service Club and Theology Department students have been collecting food donations within the school community to provide holiday dinners for families identified by Catholic Charities.

Students assembled the food baskets Monday, and the baskets and the students delivering them were to be blessed at a Thanksgiving Prayer Service at 10:45 a.m. today before delivery to the Salvation Army, Fish Samaritan House and St. Columba Food Pantry.

Interact Club members delivered fresh turkeys, potatoes, bread, lettuce, eggs, butter, pie, milk, canned goods, pop and juice to the Beatitude House on Fifth Avenue on Monday.

The Ursuline students raised money for the fresh produce by holding bake sales and taking orders on Christmas greenery.

Beatitude House is sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters to aid disadvantaged women and children in the Mahoning Valley.
