COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Saturday night’s games

No. 19 Cincinnati 28, No. 20 Pittsburgh 14

CINCINNATI — Tony Pike threw three touchdown passes, each to a different receiver, and the Bearcats took control of the Big East with their first win in eight games against the Panthers. It was the pinnacle of a season in which the Bearcats (9-2, 5-1) went through four quarterbacks because of injury. For Pike, a junior playing with a broken left (non-passing) forearm, it was the best yet.

Ohio 49, Akron 42

ATHENS, Ohio — Boo Jackson threw five touchdown passes, including a 1-yarder to David Carter with 32 seconds left. Ohio (3-8, 2-5) was in front 35-21 at the end of the third. But Dennis Kennedy had three short rushing touchdowns in the fourth, the last from one-yard out at the end of an 11-play drive with just 2:12 remaining, to help Akron (5-6, 3-4) even it at 42-all.

Florida St 37, No. 22 Maryland 3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Florida State kept alive its hopes of advancing to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game and buried Maryland’s title hopes under a barrage of sacks and takeaways. Everette Brown had 3 1/2 sacks and forced a fumble, part of an overwhelming performance by the Seminoles’ defense. Florida State (8-3, 5-3) turned two turnovers into touchdowns in taking a 21-0 halftime lead. That was enough to ensure Maryland (7-4, 4-3) its first home loss of the season and ruin the Terrapins’ bid to win the league’s Atlantic Division title.

Iowa 55, Minnesota 0

MINNEAPOLIS — Shonn Greene set Iowa’s single-season rushing record, Ricky Stanzi’s arm was in rhythm, and the Hawkeyes defense battered the Gophers to sour Minnesota’s last game at the Metrodome and retain possession of Floyd of Rosedale. The Gophers, who move into a new stadium on campus next season after 27 years playing indoors and downtown, absorbed the second-worst home loss in their history behind an 84-13 defeat by Nebraska here in 1983. Greene rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries to propel Iowa (8-4, 5-3) into to a fourth-place tie in the Big Ten with Northwestern.

S. Dakota St. 25, N. Dakota St. 24

FARGO, N.D. — Record-setting quarterback Ryan Berry came back after he was hurt early in the game to rally South Dakota State over North Dakota State on a late touchdown drive. Berry threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to JaRon Harris to pull the Jacks within 24-23 with 2:20 left. Berry followed up with a pass to Mike Steffen for the two-point conversion. Berry was knocked out of the game late in the first quarter with an apparent concussion. He came back with about 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Conrad Kjerstad sealed the game for SDSU by intercepting a pass by Nick Mertens. Mertens ran for one touchdown and passed for another for NDSU.
