PLAYOFFS \ Mount Union vs. Randolph-Macon
Old friend: Former Mount Union defensive coordinator Don Montgomery attended Saturday’s game. The current head coach at Emory and Henry had a unique perspective as his team plays in the same conference — Old Dominion Athletic Conference — as Randolph-Macon. Montgomery’s squad handed the Yellow Jackets their last loss — a 24-10 defeat on Oct. 18.
King of the playoffs: Mount Union’s Nate Kmic is at his best in the Division III playoffs, piling up 3,026 of his 7,214 career yards in the postseason. Kmic’s postseason statistics include 709 yards in 2007, 987 in 2006 and 1040 in 2005.
Money in opening round: Mount Union improved to 17-1 all-time in the opening round of the Division III playoffs. The Purple Raiders own a 56-9 postseason record, with nine national titles.
Playoffs in Ohio: Three of the 16 Division III first round playoff games were played in Ohio on Saturday. In addition to the Mount Union-Randolph Macon game, Otterbein hosted Franklin (Ind.) and Case Western Reserve hosted Wabash College (Ind.).
Nationally known: Mount Union, and Kmic in particular, were mentioned at least twice during the telecast of the Ohio State-Michigan game on ABC.
Up next: Mount Union (11-0) will host Hobart College next Saturday in the second round. Kickoff at Mount Union Stadium will be at noon.
