Ursuline thespians help collect food for needy

YOUNGSTOWN — The International Thespian Society, a division of the Educational Theatre Association, just completed the sixth year of its national community service initiative, Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat, or TOTS-EAT.

Thespian troupe 5185 at Ursuline High School helped make this year’s TOTS-EAT program a success by collecting 367 pounds of food for a local charitable food program. They joined more than 320 Thespian troupes from across the United States in collecting a record-breaking total of 308,069 pounds of canned and nonperishable food in this year’s campaign.

Breakfast with Santa at Greenford Church

GREENFORD — Breakfast With Santa will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 6 at Greenford Christian Church on Lisbon Road, as a benefit for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

Pancakes, eggs, sausage, fruit cup and a breakfast beverage will be served, and the cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.

Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa and to receive a free 4x6 photo, goody bag, craft and frame. There will be a raffle for such things as an Elmo Live toy, bicycles and gift baskets.

Burlington and others will sponsor coat drive

YOUNGSTOWN — Once again, Burlington Coat Factory stores; One Warm Coat, a national nonprofit organization that assists in the donation of free coats; and ABC’s Good Morning America are joining forces to bring warmth to the needy in the Mahoning Valley.

The Second Annual Warm Hearts & Warm Coats Drive officially kicks off Monday and runs through Jan 16, 2009.

Coats collected will be distributed free of charge to children and adults in local communities across the country and locally through the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.

To donate coats for men, women and children, go to the drop-off boxes in the Burlington stores in Boardman or Niles. Coats should be in good condition, with working fasteners, and no rips or stains. Donors will receive a receipt for tax purposes.

Habitat for Humanity home dedication set

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. — On Sunday, church congregations and volunteers from Ellwood City and Wampum will take part in the dedication of Lawrence County’s 16th Habitat for Humanity home, which they helped build at 512 Seventh St. for Christina Norris and her family.

The project was initiated by former Habitat board member Bill Blank, who donated the land and actively recruited support for the project. Everyone who helped in any way is invited to the event.
