Memorial held for late Pa. lieutenant governor

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A memorial ceremony for the late Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll has concluded at the Capitol.

Hundreds of mourners began paying their respects today before Knoll’s flag-draped casket, which will remain in the Rotunda through Saturday afternoon.

State officials believe Knoll is only the second person to receive this honor in the current Capitol building.

Knoll was remembered in tributes by Gov. Ed Rendell, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, incoming Lt. Gov. Joe Scarnati, and Rep. John Murtha.

Clinton recalled Knoll as a pioneer in Pennsylvania politics as the state’s first female lieutenant governor. Rendell says Knoll was caring and compassionate.

The 78-year-old Knoll died Nov. 12 after a four-month battle with neuroendocrine cancer.
