JACKSON-MILTON Board of education

School officials handled these matters at their meeting Thursday:

Received an update from Thomas Huff about construction to the $14.5 million Jackson-Milton Middle School/High School on Mahoning Avenue. Huff, superintendent with Ruhlin Construction Inc., Sharon, Pa., said the roof, as well as insulation, is being added to the 81,000-square-foot facility. Heating pumps and the boiler system are being set, and painting certain areas is set for this month, Huff noted. In addition, he continued, pipes are being installed, with a sprinkler system to be in place. The school for pupils in grades six through 12 is set to open in September 2009.

Praised members of the Jackson-Milton and high school student levy committees, as well as others, for their work in helping to pass two five-year levies during the Nov. 4 general election. Superintendent Kirk Baker thanked the groups for getting the word out about the 5.5-mill emergency renewal and 0.9-mill permanent improvement measures that will bring each year to the district about $988,000 and $80,000, respectively. Much of the $988,000 will go toward teachers’ salaries and wages and benefits, and other expenses; the permanent-improvement funds will be used, among other things, to buy textbooks and make technology upgrades, Treasurer John Zinger has said.
