Cosmetology students offer bargain services

CANFIELD — The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host its 10th annual Hair-a-thon from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the school on Palmyra Road. Senior cosmetology students will offer hair, skin and nail services including perms, relaxers, highlights, lowlights and coloring. Services start at just $6.

The money raised will help to defray the costs incurred by students to take the state board licensing test in May. All services are performed by senior cosmetology students under the supervision of their instructor, Linda Tomko.

Concert postponed

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Westminster College Habitat for Humanity’s benefit concert featuring the Chris Higbee Project scheduled for Saturday has been postponed. A new date hasn’t been set.

JJC to get new gym floor

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County commissioners have voted to advertise for bids for installation of a new wooden gymnasium floor at the county’s juvenile justice center. The project, which is estimated to cost $92,500, will replace the original, heavily used 1979 vintage gym floor there.

On Thursday, the commissioners also authorized $9,150 to train the county’s 911 emergency dispatchers in new technology that displays a locator map and history of previous calls from the caller’s location on the dispatchers’ computer screens when they receive a 911 call.

Ex-worker pays for theft

WARREN — Renee A. VonMoos, 59, of Eastland Avenue, a former secretary for Warren City Schools, was sentenced to two years’ probation, 30 days of electronic monitoring and 80 hours of community service for stealing $53.63 from her job.

Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court also required her to write an apology letter to the school district.

Police investigated after a parent reported the missing check, which the parent paid for a missing book.

VonMoos was working at Jefferson Elementary, 903 Fifth St. S.W., at the time, May 2007.

VonMoos deposited the check into her private checking account and failed to repay the school system the money, a police report said. VonMoos pleaded guilty to the first-degree misdemeanor in August.

Rig crash cleanup takes tow trucks hours

YOUNGSTOWN — It took more than three hours for tow trucks to right and remove a tractor-trailer that overturned on Interstate 680 northbound just past Midlothian Boulevard Thursday morning, police said.

The rig crashed into a guardrail and then hit a utility pole around 8 a.m. The extent of the driver’s injuries were not immediately known.

Computer classes offered

YOUNGSTOWN — Warriors Inc. is offering beginner computer classes every Tuesday until the end of the year starting Tuesday at the Hope Building, 2733 Market St.

The six-week training is free and open to the community and has two available times, 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Participants will learn basic computer skills and work with the program Microsoft Word. Those interested in building a r sum will have guidance as well.

Digital equipment donated

MINERAL RIDGE — The Weathersfield school board on Wednesday accepted a donation from the Seaborn Elementary School Home and School Association of $3,800 worth of digital camera equipment.

The association donated three digital cameras, three camera bags and six memory cards to the school.

The board also accepted a piano valued at $900 from Dave and Ginger Harris of Locust Street.
