Zips zap Winthrop

AKRON — Darryl Roberts posted 17 points to lead Akron to a 72-58 win over Winthrop on Tuesday night.

Nate Linhart contributed 15 points and Chris McKnight had 13 points. Linhart and McKnight led in rebounds with seven each.

Akron (2-0) went just 24-for-58 in field goals, yet it was enough to blow past the Eagles’ 19-for-43 effort.

Winthrop’s Cameron Stanley led his team with 17 points, followed by Justin Burton with 14 and Bryon Faison with 11. Winthrop (1-2) also went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line during the second half, yet allowed 17 turnovers.

The Zips left the first half with a 32-24 lead and Winthrop never got closer than a six points during the second half.

Cincinnati 82, Texas Southern 51

CINCINNATI — Alvin Mitchell scored a career-high 15 points, and Deonta Vaughn added 12 points, six assists and five rebounds to lead Cincinnati.

From the beginning, Texas Southern (0-2) was no match for UC (2-0). The Tigers missed eight of their first nine shots and fell behind 21-5 nine minutes into the game.

Texas Southern, which has yet to win under coach Tony Harvey, was led by DeAndre Hall’s career-high 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Michael Drewy notched 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Bearcats’ Yancy Gates struggled in the second contest of his career after making a strong rookie debut with 16 points and 11 rebounds against South Dakota State on Sunday. He left Tuesday’s game with 12:58 to play in the first half after recording his second foul, finishing with three points and four rebounds in 11 minutes.

Horizon League

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Shawntes Gary scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, leading Western Michigan to a 71-58 victory over Detroit in its home opener.

David Kool also had 16 points for the Broncos (1-3), who broke a three-game losing streak but won their 11th consecutive home game dating back to last year.

Xavier Keeling and Donavan Foster led Detroit (0-2) with 12 points each.

Valparaiso 69, Cent. Florida 52

VALPARAISO, Ind. — Urule Igbavboa scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Michael Rogers had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Valparaiso.

Erik Buggs scored 11 for the Crusaders (2-0), who shot 46.3 percent from the field compared with the Knights’ 30.4 percent.
