Other action

Here are other items from Tuesday’s council meeting:

Patty Colian, a Democrat and a member of the Columbiana County Board of Elections, told Councilman Clyde Brown he was not being fair to the parks department and its director, Steve Faber. The parks department for several years had an arrangement where a park worker lived in a house on land purchased by the park. In return for a low rent, the parks worker made improvements to the home on his own time. The worker is now leaving the house. “He did a lot of work in that house,” Colian told Brown. The councilman said he will continue to look into the issue.

After a 45-minute executive session, council agreed to adopt a fact finder’s report on a new contact for police. Finance Committee Chairman Justin Palmer did not release more details until the police union approves it. The fire department recently approved a 2.75 percent raise for each of three years that includes firefighters having some insurance co-pays.

City Treasurer James Armeni suggested council look into restarting a city health department. Armeni said he was serving on council 15 years ago when lawmakers decided to let the Columbiana County Health Department handle vital statistic records in the city. The city could operate a department in the black, Armeni said.
