BUTLER (30-4, 16-2)

Coach: Brad Stevens, 2nd year, 30-4 Returning starters: One, sophomore Matt Howard, who led the team with 12.3 points per game last season. Preseason prediction: Fifth. Record vs. YSU: Butler leads 14-2. YSU’s last win: A 64-62 victory at the Beeghly Center in 2006.

CLEVELAND STATE (21-13, 12-6)

Coach: Gary Waters, third year, 31-34. Overall record: 202-169. Returning starters: Four, including J’Nathan Bullock (14.8 points per game) and Cedric Jackson (13.9 points per game). The Vikings advanced to the NIT last season. Preseason prediction: First. Record vs. YSU: YSU leads 35-34, but CSU has won the last three matchups. YSU’s last win: A 68-63 victory at Beeghly Center in 2007.

DETROIT (7-23, 3-15)

Coach: Ray McCallum, 1st year. Overall record: 170-149. Returning starters: Four, including senior forward Chris Hayes (10.6 points per game). Preseason prediction: Ninth. Record vs. YSU: Detroit leads 17-6, but the Penguins have won the last four meetings.

GREEN BAY (15-15, 9-9)

Coach: Tod Kowalczyk, seventh year, 92-88. Returning starters: Five, including preseason second-team all-league selection Mike Schachtner. Schachtner (15.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season). Preseason prediction: Fourth. Record vs. YSU: Green Bay leads 17-5. YSU’s last win: YSU snapped a five-game losing streak to the Phoenix with a 76-73 win at the Beeghly Center last season.

LOYOLA (12-19, 6-12)

Coach: Jim Whitesell, six years, 65-58. Overall record: 343-252. Returning starters: Four, including J.R. Blount (15.1 points per game). Preseason prediction: Eighth. Record vs. YSU: Loyola leads 10-9. Loyola won the last meeting in Chicago 69-68 on a last-second 3-pointer YSU’s last win: YSU defeated the Ramblers the last two times the teams met at the Beeghly Center.

MILWAUKEE (14-16, 9-9)

Coach: Rob Jeter, fourth year, 45-47. Returning starters: Two, including Ricky Franklin, who averaged 9.8 points per game last season. Avery Smith also returns after sitting out last season. He averaged 15.5 points per game in 2006-07. Preseason prediction: Sixth. Record vs. YSU: Milwaukee leads 19-4. YSU’s last win: An 81-63 win at the Beeghly Center in 2007.

UIC (18-15, 9-9)

Coach: Jimmy Collins, 13th year, 194-171. Returning starters: Three, including Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year Josh Mayo (17.1 points, 3.2 assists per game). Preseason prediction: Third. Record vs. YSU: UIC leads 18-2. YSU’s last win: A 80-68 victory at the Beeghly Center in 2008.

VALPARAISO (22-14, 9-9)

Coach: Homer Drew, 20th year, 324-254. Overall record: 593-376. Returning starters: Three, including Urule Igbavboa, who averaged 11 points and 7.3 rebounds last season. Preseason prediction: Seventh. Record vs. YSU: Valparaiso leads 18-7, including the last six meetings. YSU’s last win: A 59-55 victory in 2000 at Beeghly Center.

WRIGHT STATE (21-10, 12-6)

Coach: Brad Brownell, 44-20. Overall: 127-60. Returning starters: Three, including preseason first-team all-league pick Vaughn Duggins, who averaged 13.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game last season. Preseason prediction: Second. Record vs. YSU: Wright State leads 29-7, including the last two meetings. YSU’s last win: A 72-57 victory at Beeghly Center in 2007.
