YOUNGSTOWN — The grounds superintendent at Calvary Cemetery told police he found 36 headstones knocked over and damaged, along with the glass of a mausoleum door broken. No damage estimate was given. The vandalism at the cemetery on South Belle Vista Avenue was discovered Monday.
Donald Goncy, cemetery superintendent, said more toppled headstones, possibly another three dozen, were discovered Tuesday. He said what happened is horrible and shows no respect for property that memorializes the deceased. Goncy said police have been asked to patrol inside the cemetery.
Fatal car crash probed
BELOIT — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a four-vehicle accident at 5:35 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. Route 62 that killed one person. The patrol said it was not known if snow played a part in the accident.
Jerry Lutsch, 59, of Beloit, was pronounced dead at Salem Community Hospital. He was driving west on the state route when he lost control of his vehicle, went left of center and struck an eastbound vehicle driven by Joshua Eichner, 25, of Alliance.
The patrol said Lutsch’s vehicle was then struck by a westbound vehicle driven by Janice Nitz, 50, of Beloit. Lutsch’s vehicle was then struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by Cindy McGaffick of Alliance. Her age was not available.
Eichner and Nitz were both treated at Timken Mercy Hospital in Canton.
Boy, 14, held in robbery
WARREN — Police arrested a 14-year-old Warren boy Monday afternoon in connection with a robbery at a West Market Street convenience store that resulted in an employee’s being shot in the hand.
Warren police responded to the store, Warren Food Market, 949 W. Market, about 4:14 p.m. and arrived “within seconds” of the call’s being dispatched, according to a Warren police report.
Officers located one of the two youths accused of participating in the robbery. He was running to the west of the store and was apprehended on Oak Street Southwest after a foot chase. Store employees identified the boy as one of the two robbers, and he was taken to the Trumbull County Family Juvenile Justice Center.
The 25-year-old male employee shot in the hand was taken to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Woman severely burned
STRUTHERS— A New Middletown woman is in an Akron hospital after suffering burns to 50 percent of her body.
Heather Freed, 28, and two others were in the basement of a home on Fourth Street in Struthers just after 5 p.m. Monday when fumes from a flammable fluid she was using caught fire.
The Struthers Fire Depart-ment said a flash fire occurred, causing third-degree burns over half of Freed’s body.
She was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown on Monday evening and was transported to the Akron Children’s Hospital Burn Center on Tuesday morning, where a report on her condition was unavailable late Tuesday.
No other injuries were reported, and damage to the house was minimal, city fire officials said.
