West Branch’s Swallow MVP pick in PAC


The Washington & Jefferson quarterback was joined by six teammates on the first team.

WEXFORD, Pa. — Washington & Jefferson quarterback Bobby Swallow was named most valuable player on the Presidents’ Athletic Conference football team Monday.

Swallow, a senior from West Branch High, threw for 3,047 yards and 33 touchdowns, leading the Presidents to a 9-1 record and berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Seven of his teammates were also named to the first team.

Jim Hilvert of league champion Thomas More was named coach of the year. Thomas More (8-2) also qualified for the postseason.

Also named to the first team were offensive lineman Dale Salera and defensive back Mike Baker of Grove City; tight end Jorde Laboy of Bethany, and wide receiver Tim Van Horn and punter Brice Mertiff of Thiel.

Among the players named to the second team were tight end Gary Hutsler, defensive lineman Andrew Robison and linebacker Jordan Blinn of Westminster; running back Brian Mercer, defensive lineman Tony Clark, linebacker Adam Eichler, defensive back Zach Fulmer and punter Ed Reith of Grove City; defensive lineman William Haase and defensive back Matt Joy of Thiel, and wide receiver Matt Cruse and defensive back Nelson Mitzen of Bethany.
