Youngstown State softball team adds four in early signing period


YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State signed four softball players during the early signing period this week.

The Penguins signed Rebecca Bonola (Cibola, Texas), Sarah Gabel (Columbus), Hana Somogyi (Chicago) and Kayla Vallery (Atlanta) for the 2010 season.

Bonola, a first-team all-district shortstop, batted .398 with 28 RBIs last season and led Byron P. Steele, II High School in doubles, triples and RBIs.

Gabel, an outfielder, was named to the All-Central Catholic League first team in both her freshman and junior seasons and batted .416 as a junior. She was also named to the Central District all-star team.

Somogyi, a pitcher/utility player, batted .412 as a junior at Resurrection College Prep and was named first-team all-area. As a sophomore, Somogyi ranked second in the state with 16 doubles, third in the state with a .455 batting average and 40 RBIs. She posted a 25-1 record with a 0.91 ERA and 251 strikeouts.

Vallery, a pitcher, is a three-year letter winner at Newnan High School and was all-region, all-county and all-state as a sophomore and junior. She pitched 1061‚Ñ3 innings and struck out 227 with a 0.65 ERA as a junior.
