Leathernecks overtime winner via field goal


Northern Iowa clinched at least a tie for the conference championship.

MACOMB, Ill. — Taylor Rowan completed a 34-yard field goal in overtime to give Western Illinois a 48-45 win over Illinois State on Saturday.

Eyad Salem pushed the match into overtime with a touchdown for Illinois State (3-7, 2-5 Missouri Valley Football Conference) off a 12-yard pass from Kevin Brockway with 43 second left to make it an even 45-45. That score came less than two minutes after Herb Donaldson ran 1 yard for a touchdown to put Western Illinois (6-4, 4-3) ahead 45-38.

Rowan opened scoring with a 30-yard field goal in the first period. He also completed six extra point kicks for the Leathernecks. Donaldson had three touchdowns and 243 yards for Western Illinois while Brockaway threw for 175 yards.

W. Mendenhall led Illinois State, rushing for three touchdowns and 106 yards. Matt Barr threw for a pair of touchdowns and had 134 yards.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Corey Lewis scored three touchdowns and Northern Iowa clinched at least a tie for the Missouri Valley Conference championship.

It was the Sycamores’ 25th straight loss over three seasons and the eighth time this year they failed to score a touchdown.

Heavy rain and wind forced both teams to rely mainly on their running games, and the Panthers (9-2, 7-1 Missouri Valley) totaled 238 yards rushing to just 106 yards by the Sycamores (0-11, 0-7), who managed only six first downs all game.

N. Dakota St. 48, Missouri St. 27

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Tyler Roehl rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns as North Dakota State converted two Missouri State turnovers early in the second half.

North Dakota State (6-4, 4-3), which averaged 9.8 yards per offensive play to 4 yards for Missouri State, had 462 yards of offense to 299 yards for Missouri State (3-7, 2-5).

S. Illinois 38, S. Dakota St. 35

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Kyle Dougherty kicked a 28-yard field goal with less than three minutes remaining for Southern Illinois.

Kyle Minett led South Dakota State (6-5, 5-2) with a pair of touchdowns and 90 yards.

For Southern Illinois (8-2, 6-1), Chris Dieker passed for 245 yards and one touchdown.
