No. 10 Gonzaga cruised past Montana State-Billings and No. 13 Memphis breezed past Fairfield.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Freshman Tyler Zeller scored 18 points Saturday to help top-ranked North Carolina beat Pennsylvania 86-71 despite playing without reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough. Deon Thompson added 17 points for the Tar Heels, who led by double figures much of the day yet had trouble putting together a game-sealing run without their injured senior roaming the paint.

No. 10 Gonzaga 83, Montana St.-Billings 52

SPOKANE, Wash. — Austin Daye and Josh Heytvelt scored 15 points apiece and Gonzaga cruised past Division II Montana State-Billings. Daye, who suffered a partially-torn knee ligament over the summer, showed no signs of the injury, playing 25 minutes and grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking four shots. Michael Hall scored 14 unanswered points in the final 3:14 of the first half to cut Gonzaga’s lead to 33-28. Hall led all scorers by connecting on five three-pointers, scoring 24 points to lead the Yellowjackets.

No. 13 Memphis 90, Fairfield 63

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Highly touted freshman Tyreke Evans scored 19 points and Memphis beat Fairfield in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Tip-off Tournament. Shawn Taggart had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Doneal Mack also scored 14. Antonio Anderson added 12 points, and Robert Dozier finished with 10. Warren Edney had 24 points for Fairfield.

No. 14 Tennessee 114, Chattanooga 75

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tyler Smith had 21 points and five assists for Tennessee. Tennessee freshman Scotty Hopson scored 17 points. Wayne Chism had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Stephen McDowell scored 20 points for Chattanooga. Ty Patterson and Nicchaeus Doaks both added 16.

No. 17 Miami 96, Florida Southern 60

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Dwyane Collins had 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to help Miami open its season against Division II Florida Southern. Jack McClinton also scored 18 for the Hurricanes, whose preseason ranking was their highest ever. Eddie Rios had a career-high 17 points, and Brian Asbury finished with 13.

No. 18 USC 78, UC Irvine 55

LOS ANGELES — Taj Gibson scored 17 points, including six straight in a decisive second-half run, and Southern California defeated UC Irvine to win its first season opener in four years.
