Game Notes: The Penguins, who were 14-17 a year ago, have a veteran group returning, although injuries have taken one returning starter out of the lineup in senior Velissa Vaughn. Senior Tiara Scott returns after a junior year when she was named second team All-Horizon and also the league’s All-Newcomer teams. She averaged 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds. Kent State struggled through a 9-21 season a year ago, but the Flashes return most of last season’s regulars. Senior center Anna Kowalska is back after missing the second half of last season with injuries. She averaged 14.5 points and nearly eight rebounds. When Kowalska was out freshmen Ellie Shields, a Howland High standout, took over in the post. She finished averaging 9 points a game. The Series: Kent State has command of the overall series between the teams with a 24-12 record including wins in the teams last two meetings. The Flashes beat the Penguins in their most recent meeting in 2003-04 66-53 in Youngstown and also won at Kent in 1002-03 74-70. YSU’s last win in the series came in 2001-02 with a 79-64 victory at Beeghly Center. Up Next: The Penguins will return home for their next two contests beginning next Wednesday with a contest against Buffalo which will tip-off at 7:05 p.m. The Penguins will also be at home on Nov. 22 when they meet Niagara in the opener of a doubleheader with the men’s team. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m.
