Arnold lowers record

AKRON — Senior Olivia Arnold lowered her school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, but the YSU swimming and diving team lost to Akron Friday, 155-77.

Arnold won the 1,000 free in a time of 10:23.19, which was a second faster than the school record she set last Friday.

Arnold placed third in the 500 freestyle and was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Jennifer Johnson finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.74) and Megan Rupe placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.21).

Fitch’s Bagoly signs with Kent

KENT — Fitch senior catcher Jason Bagoly signed a national letter-of-intent to play baseball at Kent State.

Bagoly (6-4, 220) played in the Youngstown Class B Summer League with Rondinelli Sports, where he finished second in the league with a .456 average.

Bagoly also played for the Midwest Redbirds in fall baseball, which is an elite travel team run by Brian Hopkins of the St. Louis Cardinals.

“We feel that Jason is the best hitter in the state of Ohio,” said Kent coach Scott Stricklin. “He is a big, strong, physical player that has improved his skills behind the plate dramatically. He will make an immediate impact on our team because of the way he handles himself at the plate.

“Not only is Jason a good baseball player, but also he is an outstanding student. We are thrilled to have him on board.”

Pavlik benefit

YOUNGSTOWN — Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will join former Browns players Bernie Kosar, Tim Manoa, Felix Wright and Reggie Langhorn for the “Night With Champions” tonight at the Maronite Center.

The event is an appreciation dinner for one of Pavlik’s longtime trainers, Rocky Taumoepeau, owner of Rocky’s Fitness in Boardman.

A portion of the proceeds will go toward the Rich Center, a facility that treats autism.

Tickets cost $50.

Past Youngstown boxing champions are also scheduled to attend, along with former Ohio State linebacker Tom Cousineau, who played in the NFL for the Browns and 49ers.

Erie Boxing Classic

ERIE, Pa. — The Erie Boxing Classic will be presented at the Avalon Hotel on Dec. 10 at 8 p.m.

The eight-round, welterweight, main bout will send Nelson Romine (9-1-2) of Columbus against Delaney Howard (5-1) from Las Vegas.

Ronson Frank (12-0) of New York City is slated to meet John Johnson (12-2, 10 KOs) from Hornlake, Mississippi at Light Heavyweights.

Thiel Hall of Fame

GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Thiel College Athletics Hall of Fame class will be enshrined on February 8, 2009.

The class includes 34 candidates, two athletes, one former coach, and one team.

Churchill feature

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A to the Croft won the $44,160 Schiller, Osbourn, Barnes & Maloney Purse for fillies and mares Friday, beating Laguna Plateada by three lengths at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Robby Albarado, A to the Croft ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:45.65 and paid $5.40, $3.60 and $2.40. Laguna Plateada returned $8.80 and $3, and Day of Victory paid $2.40.

A to the Croft, a 3-year-old, earned $28,796.

Tigers raise prices

DETROIT — Tigers fans looking forward to seeing games against teams such as the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox will have to pay a little more next season.

The Tigers said they’re raising ticket prices for choice seats to some select games.

The increase will range from $2 to $7 for 21 games, including the three-game series with the Cubs and Red Sox, Friday and Saturday games in June, July, and August, and opening day.

The Tigers said Friday that they’re holding prices on more than 70 percent of the seats at Comerica Park.

The Tigers drew more than 3.2 million fans last season, while ranking 21st with an average ticket price of $23.36.

NYC Marathon death

NEW YORK — New York City Marathon officials say a 41-year-old man who collapsed during the race has died.

Race organizer New York Road Runners says the man died Thursday in a New York City hospital.

The group did not identify him.

This is the third death connected to the Nov. 2 marathon.
