FORT WORTH, Texas — TK LaFleur scored 28 points and TCU upset Maryland in the season opener for both teams. This certainly wasn’t the kind of start Kristi Toliver, a preseason All-American, and the Terrapins wanted after last season when they were 33-4 and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years.

DURHAM, N.C. — Chante Black scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Duke’s come-from-behind victory. Carrem Gay added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers’ Epiphanny Prince scored 26 points and had a career-high seven steals in the season opener for both teams.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Cetera DeGraffenreid and Italee Lucas each scored 14 points for North Carolina in the opening round of the Women’s Preseason National Invitation Tournament. Jessica Breland added 12 points for the Tar Heels.

BERKELEY, Calif. — Ashley Walker had 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals as Cal extended its nonconference home winning streak to 30 games. Walker scored eight of Cal’s first 10 points.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s Merideth Marsh tied a career high with five 3-pointers. Sophomore Hannah Tuomi added 14 points, which matched her career high.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Ariana Moorer scored 19 points in her collegiate debut and Monica Wright added 16 for Virginia. The Cavaliers opened their season by tuning up for a game on Monday at No. 7 Tennessee and a visit to state rival No. 25 Old Dominion four days later. Virginia led 34-19 despite shooting under 27 percent in the first half.
No. 17 Arizona State 76, Cleveland State 59
TEMPE, Ariz. — Sybil Dosty had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Arizona State in the opening round of the preseason WNIT. Briann January added eight points and nine assists for the Sun Devils. The 6-foot-3 Dosty hit 7 of 10 shots from the floor and had her way against a diminutive Vikings team that started four guards. Down 36-22 at halftime, Cleveland State drew within 10 early in the second half, but Arizona State’s Kate Engelbrecht hit back-to-back 3-pointers to quell the rally. Dominique Butler had 18 points for the Vikings, who made their first NCAA tourney appearance last spring.

CINCINNATI — Ta’Shia Phillips scored 25 points and Xavier used its front line to full advantage in the opening round of the Women’s Preseason NIT.
