St. Patrick School plans Night at the Races

HUBBARD — On Nov. 22, St. Patrick School will sponsor its first Night at the races in the Parish Center, on North Main Street.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and racing begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person at the door. Included in the price are food, beer and soft drinks. Patrons may also bring their own coolers and snacks if they like.

The evening will also include a 50-50 drawing and a Chinese auction. New for this year is an outrageous hat contest. The winner will receive a special giveaway.

If your family or business wants to sponsor a horse, the cost is $10, and they get to name it. Call the school at (330) 534-2509 before the event to buy your horse or for more information.

Church youth group will be serving lunch

COLUMBIANA — First Presbyterian Church, 28 E. Park Ave., will be the site of a soup and sandwich lunch sponsored by the Alpha Omega Youth Group from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov 22.

The cost is $4, which includes a bowl of beef vegetable soup or pasta fagioli, a hot turkey and cheese sandwich, dessert and beverage. Carry-out quarts of soup cost $5.

Craft tables will feature a variety of homemade gifts, holiday decorations and handcrafted stocking stuffers, and there will also be flea market tables.

Holiday open house at Youngstown museum

YOUNGSTOWN — “A Journey to Christmas Past” is the theme chosen by Mahoning Valley Historical Society for a holiday open house in December at the Arms Family Museum of Local History, 648 Wick Ave.

Christmas trees at the museum will be decorated with ornaments that show the historical progression of styles. There will be an early German feather tree, an arts and crafts style white tree, a Victorian-style tree, and a 1950s tree filled with lights and shiny ornaments.

A preview party from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 5 will feature cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The cost for the evening is $18 for members and $23 for guests. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the society at (330) 743-2589.

Visitors attending the free open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 will have the opportunity to view the holiday decor and new exhibits, and children will be invited to make Christmas ornaments in the hands-on room. Specials will be offered at the museum shop and there will be refreshments. The decorations will be on display all of December.

Ring those bells

CANFIELD — Members of the Kiwanis Club of Western Mahoning County will ring the bells for the Salvation Army from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Giant Eagle. Assisting with the fundraiser will be members of the Key clubs of Canfield and Jackson Milton High schools.

All the money collected will be used for projects and to help individuals in the Mahoning Valley. Anyone willing to volunteer time to ring the bells should call (330) 270-5999.

Dance group plans holiday celebration

GIRARD — USA Dance, Youngstown-Warren Ballroom Dancers Association, is inviting the public to an annual Snowflake Ball from 5 to 10 a.m. Dec. 6 at the Avon Oaks Ballroom, 1401 N. State St. The evening will include a dance, buffet, and a show featuring DanceSport Champions Rene Ostarek and Bronislava.

A limited number of tickets will be available through Saturday, and they cost $40 for dance members, $45 for nonmembers, and $25 for full-time students.

A mini dance camp with the champions will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. that day. Group lessons are $15.
