BASEBALL ROUNDUP News and notes

Sizemore wins Silver Slugger: Grady Sizemore has some silver to go with his gold. Cleveland’s center fielder recently won his second straight Gold Glove Award, and Thursday he earned his first Silver Slugger in voting by AL managers and coaches. Sizemore is the first Indians outfielder to win the award — given to the top offensive player at each position — since Juan Gonzalez in 1991. At 26, Sizemore is the youngest Cleveland player to win since Jim Thome in 1996. Sizemore hit a career-high 33 homers and had 38 steals this season, joining Joe Carter as the only Cleveland players in the 30-30 club.

Diamondbacks: Randy Johnson has filed for free agency after failing to reach a deal to return to Arizona. The pitcher’s agents say the Diamondbacks’ ecomonic situation was not favorable for a new contract.

Yankees sign Marte: Left-hander Damaso Marte and the Yankees agreed to a $12 million, three-year contract that includes a club option for 2012. New York last week declined a $6 million option on the 33-year-old reliever, choosing to pay a $250,000 buyout.

Swisher dealt to Yankees: The Yankees also acquired Nick Swisher from the White Sox. Swisher, who can play first base and all three outfield spots, was obtained for pitching prospect Jeff Marquez and infielder Wilson Betemit. The teams also swapped a pair of minor league right-handers as part of the deal, with Chicago receiving Jhonny Nunez and New York getting Kaneoka Texeira. Swisher, who turns 28 on Nov. 25, hit just .219 with 24 homers and 69 RBIs last season.

Marlins-Cubs trade: The Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg from the Marlins, a move than means closer Kerry Wood won’t return. Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year who saved 34 games this year, had been the longest-tenured player on the Cubs. Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year who saved 34 games this year, had been the longest-tenured player on the Cubs. General manager Jim Hendry said Wood was deserving of a three- or four-year deal and the Cubs are not prepared to offer him one. In addition to the right-handed Gregg, who was the Marlins’ closer until the final month last season, Chicago also has a talented setup man in Carlos Marmol, who could close.

Baselines: The Brewers exercised Salomon Torres’ $3.75 million option even though he announced his retirement. The Brewers plan to place Torres on the voluntary retired list, which will remove Torres from Milwaukee’s 40-man roster. … The Twins have signed manager Ron Gardenhire to a two-year contract extension through the 2011 season. … Former Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo joined the Phillies’ coaching staff.
