Warren police issue warrant for suspect in drive-by shooting
STAFF REPORT
WARREN — Police have issued an arrest warrant for a 23-year-old city man in the drive-by shooting of an 18-year-old man on Hayes Avenue Southwest at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The warrant accuses Reginald Cherry, whose last address was on Delaware Avenue, of felonious assault.
Police said Cherry is wanted in the shooting of Cedric Brogden of Highland Avenue, who was hit in the biceps while he walked on Hayes Avenue Southwest.
Brogden told police that a vehicle passed him and someone in it began firing a weapon. Brogden was treated at St. Joseph Health Center.
Police responding to Brogden’s 911 call located the vehicle they believed was involved in the shooting and took two men into custody. The third man, believed to be Cherry, fled on foot and escaped.
The driver of the car, Nathan J. Ferris of Crestview Avenue Southeast, was charged with failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a misdemeanor.
He was arraigned Wednesday in Warren Municipal Court and pleaded innocent. He was released on a personal recognizance bond. The other man in the car was not charged.
Police say they are investigating the possibility the shooting was retaliation for the April 3 shooting death of Kendel Cherry of Elm Road at Hampshire House Apartments in the southwest area of the city. Kendel Cherry is a relative of Reginald Cherry’s, police said.
Brogden was a suspect in Kendel Cherry’s death, said Detective Wayne Mackey of the Warren police.
Brogden also was the target of gunfire in the Hampshire House Apartments about a month ago, police said.
