Alex Ovechkin had a goal and two assists, and Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and three assists for the Capitals, who led 3-1 after one period. Mike Green added a goal and an assist for Washington. Scott Walker scored on a power play for Carolina.

NEWARK, N.J. — Michal Rozsival and Nikolai Zherdev scored during two-man advantages in New York’s four-goal second period. Rozsival, Chris Drury, and Lauri Korpikoski — with his first NHL regular-season goal — scored in a span of 2:08 to turn a one-goal deficit into a 3-1 lead before 10 minutes elapsed in the second. Travis Zajac and Jamie Langenbrunner scored for New Jersey.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ryan Miller made 30 saves and Tim Connolly, Adam Mair and Henrik Tallinder each had a goal and an assist for Buffalo. Jason Pominville also scored to help the Sabres snap a two-game losing streak. David Perron had a goal and two assists, and Lee Stempniak and Patrik Berglund had a goal and an assist each for the Blues.

SUNRISE, Fla. — Craig Anderson made 24 saves for his first shutout of the season and Gregory Campbell had two goals and an assist for Florida. Bryan McCabe and Nathan Horton also scored, and Jay Bouwmeester had two assists. Anderson got the start after making 45 saves Sunday night in a 3-1 victory in Anaheim that snapped a six-game losing streak. Mike Smith made 27 saves for Tampa Bay. With the loss, the Lightning closed out a five-game trip with a 1-3-1 record. Tampa Bay, which went 0-for-5 on the power play, has scored six goals in its last four games.
