Big 3 boosts Miami in opener

LOS ANGELES — Kenny Hayes hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining and Miami (Ohio) opened its season by holding off Weber State 70-66 on Wednesday night in the first round of the 2K Sports Classic.

Hayes, whose basket snapped a 66-all tie, finished with 24 points. Tyler Dierkers and Michael Bramos added 13 points each as the RedHawks (1-0) gave coach Charlie Coles his 300th career victory. Miami scored 20 points off Weber State’s 21 turnovers.

Michigan 76, Northeastern 56

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Manny Harris had 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as Michigan won the Ann Arbor regional of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament. Michigan (2-0) will play the winner of the UCLA regional in the semifinals next week at Madison Square Garden. DeShawn Sims added 19 points for Michigan.

S. Illinois 80, Massachusetts 73

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Carlton Fay scored 17 points to lead Southern Illinois (2-0), which advanced to the Coaches vs. Cancer semifinals at Madison Square Garden. Bryan Mullins added 16 points, Kevin Dillard had 14 points and Tony Boyle chipped in 12 points for the Salukis.

IUPUI 65, Michigan Tech 51

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jon Avery had 16 points and 13 rebounds as IUPUI beat Michigan Tech in a consolation-bracket game in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.regional in Ann Arbor on Wednesday.

Alex Young added 15 points for IUPUI and Leroy Nobles scored 11.

Robby Springborn led Michigan Tech with 11 points and Fedrick Bowe added 10.
