Soccer player of year

LOS ANGELES — Landon Donovan has been voted the top U.S. soccer player of 2008, becoming the only five-time winner of the Honda Player of the Year award.

Donovan led Major League Soccer in scoring this year with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He is the career scoring leader for the United States and is now training in Germany, with the possibility of playing in Europe again.

In a vote by a nationwide panel of journalists announced Tuesday, Donovan finished with 297 points.

Jockey’s big day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At one point during Julien Leparoux’s record-tying day, a rider approached him in the jockey’s room at Churchill Downs and made a simple request.

“Someone said, ’You going to let one of us win one today?”’ Leparoux said Tuesday with a sheepish grin.

The answer: not really.

The 25-year-old Frenchman tied Hall of Famer Pat Day’s track record with seven wins on one card, narrowly missing a chance to make the record his own when 3-year-old gelding Sinister came up just short in the final race of the day.

Marshall sets record

After missing out on the Beijing Olympics, Peter Marshall planned to swim a few more meets, then call it a career.

He might want to reconsider. With little training, the 26-year-old American set a short-course world record Tuesday in the 100-meter backstroke at a World Cup meet in Stockholm, Sweden. He touched in 49.94 seconds, breaking Ryan Lochte’s record of 49.99 set two years ago.
