Mooney’s Ashley Cuba is Div. II player of the year

YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney senior Ashley Cuba topped an outstanding career by being selected the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association’s state co-Player of the Year.

Cuba, a midfielder, shared the honor with Danielle Hubka of Strongsville.

In addition to being named first-team all-state in girls Div. II, Cuba was also picked the division’s Player of the Year.

Joining Cuba on the Div. II first team were Heather Beachy (Champion) and Katie Griswold (Mooney), both senior forwards.

Lakeview senior forward Chelsea Baker and Crestview sophomore midfielder Eryn Weber made second team.

In girls Div. I, Megan Long, a senior defender at Howland, was selected to the first team while Boardman senior midfielder Jaime Avona and Poland senior forward Samantha Robertson earned second team honors.

D.J. Herman, a senior defender at Boardman, and Chris Sekman, a senior midfielder at Canfield, received second-team citations in the boys Div. I honor squad.

In boys Div. II, Caleb Capron of West Branch and Tyler Day of Champion, were named first team. Capron is a senior forward and Day is a senior midfielder.

Howland senior forward Eric Albani received second team honors.

Two senior midfielders were picked to the boys Div. III first team: Sam Miller of Badger and Michael Perisa of Warren JFK.

Making second team in boys Div. III were Marcus Heath (Badger, senior, forward) and Justin Kleinknecht (Crestview, senior, forward).

The assistant coach of the year in boys Div. II was Cardinal Mooney’s Lou Cali.
