WHAT GIRLS THINK

Members of The Sisterhood organization at South Range High School polled 54 girls and women about themselves and social pressures. Turning Technologies in Youngstown provided audience-response hardware so participants could answer questions anonymously. Findings include:

When asked if they had ever gossiped about a friend, 98 percent responded “yes.”

When asked if they would rather be a leader than a follower, 89 percent said “yes.”

When asked by whom they feel most judged, 49 percent said “other girls,” 25 percent said “boys,” 16 percent said “other adults” and 7 percent said “parents.”

When asked if they could change one thing about their appearance, 44 percent said it would be “weight,” 31 percent said “hair,” 10 percent said “overall appearance” and 5 percent said “clothes.”
