The following events will be held locally to honor veterans who have served or are serving from our area.
MAHONING COUNTY
Canfield: There will be a Veterans Day Service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main. Street.
Struthers:
• A Veterans Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Struthers High School Memorial, 111 Euclid Ave. Laddie J. Fedor will be master of ceremonies and Rev. Robert Bonnot of St. Nicholas will perform the invocation and benediction. Jacqueline Jepsen will sing the national anthem. Former Marine Mike Shepherd will be the main speaker; guest speakers are Struthers Mayor Terry Strocker, Struthers school board President Dean Burns and Cmdr. Jerry Arendas of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7538. Gene Yuhas and Amelia Zaluski will offer remarks. Struthers Third Ward Councilman Robert Burnside will place the ceremonial wreath, and Struthers High School student Thomas Rouzzo will play taps. Lou Marino, John Mangine and Sherman Miles of the VFW will perform the gun salute.
• The seventh-grade advanced language-arts students of Struthers Middle School, 800 Fifth St., are hosting a Veterans Day Assembly from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday that will consist of jazz music, singing and the history behind Veterans Day. The entire school will participate in the program by showing their singing and theatrical talents. The American Legion Post 158 will post and retire colors to involve our community. Veterans from the community have been invited to thank them for their service. The class will serve cookies and punch after the program in the library.
Youngstown:
• The United Veterans Council, representing over 30 veterans organizations in the Valley, invites the public to the Annual Veterans Day Program, being held at the Mahoning County Courthouse, downtown Youngstown, 11 a.m. Tuesday. The guest speaker will be John P. Brown III, last year’s National Commander for AMVETS. There will be a POW Remembrance, and two wreaths will be laid, one at the courthouse and the other at The Man on the Monument, with a rifle salute and taps.
SBlt A flag-raising at Alpha School of Excellence, 2546 Hillman St. will be at 8 a.m.
SBlt A flag-raising at McGuffey Elementary School, 310 S. Schenley Ave., 9 a.m.
SBlt A presentation by the Youngstown ROTC program from East High School on the significance of Veterans Day, at Taft Elementary School, 730 E. Avondale Ave., at AT 9:15 a.m., followed by an ROTC drill demonstration at Taft Elementary School at 9:15 a.m.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
Cortland: Lakeview High School, 300 Hillman Drive, will honor veterans at 8 a.m. Wednesday in the auditorium. There will be a guest speaker, and the band and choir will perform. Veterans and guests are welcome. Please call (330) 637-4921 to reserve seats.
Girard: Girard Veterans Council will be conducting Veterans Day services Tuesday at the Viaduct and Girard War Memorial starting at 6 p.m. Lineup will be behind Boardman Medical Supply at 5:30 p.m.
Hubbard: Roosevelt Elementary School will be honoring veterans at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday in the gymnasium. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. who are presently serving our country or who are veterans of any war or conflict will be recognized. This event is for veterans and students only.
McDonald: The senior government classes of McDonald High School are sponsoring a Veterans Day Program at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Gamertsfelder Auditorium at the high school for any McDonald veteran, school or village employee. A catered breakfast will follow. Please call the high school office to RSVP at (330) 530-8051, ext. 1101.
Niles: Veterans Day will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Niles City Cemetery, state Route 46 and Vienna Road. The guest speaker will be Staff Sgt. Jeff Emrick of the U.S. Army. The event is sponsored by the American Legion William McKinley Post 106.
North Jackson: Jackson-Milton High School, 10748 Mahoning Ave., will have a Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Don Patton Gymnasium to honor all veterans. Anthony Lariccia, vice president of the local Merrill Lynch agency, will be the guest speaker. All area veterans are invited to attend and to stay for refreshments.
Warren: W.D. Packard Concert Band with Earle L. Louder, euphonium, and guest conductor Loras John Schissel will present a concert with a special salute to our veterans at 3 p.m. today at W.D. Packard Music Hall. The concert is free.
MERCER COUNTY
Sharon: The Pennsylvania CareerLink Mercer County, in conjunction with the U.S. Army and the City of Sharon, will host the New Army Experience from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday. The event will be open to the public, in the parking lot of Reyers Shoe Store, 40 S. Water Ave. Actual drill sergeants will hand out dog tags to all attendees who want to experience various simulations or try basic-training courses. The exhibit is a scaled-down version of the Army Experience Center in Philadelphia’s Franklin Mills Mall. That location, which opened this summer, features Blackhawk and Apache simulators and a mock Tactical Operations Center, as well as multimedia explorations of the 150 careers available to active-duty personnel.
The Army Experience exhibit offers an interactive preview of military life to people who are undecided about their future. Its informal setting is perfect for those who want more information. Everyone is invited.
Hermitage:
SBlt The annual Shenango Valley Veterans Day Parade will march down East State Street Tuesday. Six divisions representing Sharon, Hermitage, Farrell, Sharpsville, Wheatland and West Middlesex will form at Kerrwood Drive at 5:30 p.m. and then move west on State Street at 6:30 p.m. The route covers one mile and ends at the Sharon city line. The Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars is host for the event.
• Whispering Oaks Retirement Community, 260 S. Buhl Farm Drive, will hold a Veterans Day Salute from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a program outside and inside. Speakers will include Ed Hopkins, WW II Navy veteran; Gia Hart, Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran; Daniel Jones, National Guard veteran; and Joe Baldwin, WW II Navy veteran. There will also be a slide show and refreshments. Overflow parking wukk be at Kennedy Catholic High School. Shuttle bus service provided.
