YOUNGSTOWN — The musical “Little Women” will make its Mahoning Valley premiere this week when Youngstown State University Theater stages the Broadway smash.

Based on the 1868 novel of Louisa May Alcott, “Little Women” follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War-era America. The timeless and beloved story is accompanied by a powerful score.

“Little Women” opened on Broadway in 2005 and enjoyed a national tour that featured Boardman native Maureen McGovern in the role of Marmee.

McGovern was pleased to hear that University Theater was producing the musical. “Having played Marmee both on Broadway and in the first national tour of “Little Women,” I found the show to be an incredibly moving experience for our cast and audience members,” said McGovern. “It’s a joyous, funny, heartwarming musical for the whole family. I applaud the YSU theater department for choosing it, and wish you all the best, great success and joy for your production.”

Cast members include Roxanne Hauldren as Jo March; Joel Stigliano as Professor Bhaer; Alyssa Connelly as Amy March; Deanna Scott as Meg March; Laura Young as Beth March; and Molly Makselan as Marmee March.
