Women’s basketball meets Pitt-Johnstown
YOUNGSTOWN — The YSU women’s basketball team will play an exhibition contest against Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.
This will be the second exhibition contest for the Penguins, who also played Ashland on Nov. 4.
YSU’s opens Nov. 15 at Kent State.
The 2008-09 Penguins squad features six seniors, three juniors, a sophomore and three freshmen.
Five of the 13 student-athletes on the roster are newcomers to the team, and another is in her first year after sitting out last season per NCAA transfer regulations.
UPJ finished 10-18 last year.
Arnold breaks records
YOUNGSTOWN — YSU senior Olivia Arnold broke a 24-year-old school record in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday night as the Penguins defeated Cleveland St. 140-93 and Niagara 160-79.
Arnold swam a record-breaking 5:03.60 in the 500 eclipsing the mark set by Cathy Sipka in 1984. Arnold also lowered her school mark in the 1,000 freestyle and won the 200 breaststroke coming up just shy of another school mark.

Thunder adds Taylor
BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Valley Thunder announced that defensive back Brandon Taylor, (5’11, 185) has been assigned to the team.
Taylor enters his second season in the af2 and his first with the Thunder.
A native of New Jersey, Taylor debuted in the af2 during the 2008 campaign with the Albany Conquest.
Taylor made an immediate impact during his rookie season. Playing in all 16 games, he recorded a team high 80.5 tackles and seven interceptions.
He also recorded 11 pass break-ups and recovered a fumble which was returned for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Prior to his af2 career, Taylor was a three-year starter at safety for the Univ. of New Hampshire.
Women’s bowling event Nov. 9-16
YOUNGSTOWN — The BVL Singles “Bowl Where You Are Tournament” will be Nov. 9 through Nov. 16 at all area centers during league play.
Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association members may enter once for each sanctioned league bowled.
The fee is $5 per league.
The bowler’s first three games of league participation will count, cashing only once with her highest score.
The handicap tournament is 90% of 230 with a ratio of at least one-in-five entries cashing.
Official team postcard must be completely filled out and submitted or postmarked for each $5 entry bowled by Nov. 20.
Champion will receive first-place money.

Hole-in-one
YOUNGSTOWN — Jack Moran of Boardman made a hole-in-one on the 175-yard, No. 7 hole with a seven wood at Mill Creek Golf Course.
Witnesses were Bob Berry and Dan Altamese.
Fitzpatrick signs
YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney High senior Drew Fitzpatrick will play baseball at the Univ. of Louisville.
Fitzpatrick is a two-time all-Steel Valley Conf. pick and batted .471 as a junior.
He had 37 RBIs, stole 21 bases and scored 40 runs for the Cardinals last year.
He had a 6-2 pitching record with a 2.66 ERA.
Pirates hire Hill
PITTSBURGH — Perry Hill, a major league coach for 14 seasons, was hired Friday as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ first base coach.
Hill succeeds Lou Frazier, who was not brought back after spending one season on manager John Russell’s staff.
The 56-year-old Hill was most recently with the Florida Marlins as their first base and infield coach from 2002-06.
He also was a coach with Texas (1992-95), Detroit (1997-99) and Montreal (2000-01).
Hill will be one of two new coaches on Russell’s staff in 2009. Joe Kerrigan was recently hired to succeed Jeff Andrews as the pitching coach.

Colt brings top price
LEXINGTON, Ky. — A weanling colt by a son of Giant’s Causeway brought $310,000 for the top price Friday during Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale.
Clear Ridge Stable purchased the colt out of the Dixieland Band mare Queen’s Music and consigned by Castle Park Farm LLC, agent.
