NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township’s Veterans Day observance originally scheduled for Nov. 11 has been moved to today. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial at the intersections of state Routes 164 and 165.
Sgt. Major. Robert Fairchild, retired, will be the keynote speaker. In the event of bad weather, the program will be at the township safety building on state Route 165.

Write-in votes for Allen
BOARDMAN — Donald Allen, a veterinarian, received 167 votes statewide in his write-in bid for the presidency, according to unofficial results compiled by the Ohio Secretary of State’s office.
Of the six write-in candidates, Allen had the most votes. But the 167 votes were well short of the 2,749,587 votes Democrat Barack Obama received in the election in Ohio.
School lunch program
YOUNGSTOWN — Pupils attending Life Skills Center of Youngstown, 3409 Market St., will be able to secure free and reduced-price lunches at the school beginning Wednesday.
The school is now participating in the state’s federally funded school lunch program.
North Side house fire
YOUNGSTOWN — A candle burning in the dining room of 29 Benita Ave. started a fire at the North Side home, the fire department said.
The resident said she left the candle unattended and came downstairs when she heard the smoke detector Thursday morning. Reports show the fire started on a chair. The resident tried to put the fire out before calling 911.
Damage was set at $20,000 to the house and contents.
New firefighters
YOUNGSTOWN — Two new firefighters, Christopher Stephens and Jeffrey Goodlet, were to be sworn in Friday by Mayor Jay Williams. Also, Marilyn Nadal and Gene Cook were promoted to lieutenant and Wilbur Mullins to captain.
The positions being filled replace those who retired over the last month with an early retirement incentive.
The mayor also commissioned into service a new ladder truck purchased with a $400,000 grant. The city had an allocation of $108,000.
Phone scam alert
GIRARD — Police are warning senior citizens to be cautious of callers claiming to be relatives.
Police say an 86-year-old woman received a call from an unidentified man claiming to be her grandson. The man told the woman he was involved in an accident in Canada and needed money.
She did not send any cash and later found out the man was not her grandson.
Police said similar calls have been made to elderly residents in other states.
Police officer crashes
YOUNGSTOWN — A police officer on his way to a call swerved to avoid the vehicle in front of him and crashed into El Tropical bar at 1666 Poland Ave. about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.
Patrolman George Wallace was not seriously injured. They said Wallace was eastbound on Poland Avenue when the driver in front of him turned into the bar parking lot and he swerved to avoid hitting the car.
Garcar said the crash resulted in a big hole in the building. No other injuries were reported.
2-hour delay at schools
SALEM — City schools and their bus routes will be on a two-hour delay Tuesday for a professional development program for teachers.
Doors will open at 9:40 a.m. for pupils in grades seven to 12. Classes will start at 9:50 a.m.
Pupils at the three elementary schools will report at staggered times: Southeast School, 10 a.m. for supervised playground; Reilly School, 10:05 a.m. for supervised playground; and Buckeye School, 10:15 a.m. for supervised playground.
Car vandalized in Girard
GIRARD — Police are trying to determine who vandalized a car with food and an Obama political sign.
A 59-year-old Navajo Trail man told police his son’s car was parked in the driveway late Thursday and was found Friday wrapped in plastic wrap with eggs, flour, dead fish and an Obama sign thrown on the trunk.
The man said he has no idea who would have done it.
