Pirates hold line

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates cited the struggling economy for keeping season-ticket prices the same for a seventh consecutive year.

“We understand that we are all facing tough economic times and, as a result, we chose not to increase our season-ticket prices for full season, forty- and twenty-game season-ticket plans,” team president Frank Coonelly said Tuesday.

Spokesman Brian Warecki said exact pricing hasn’t been worked out, but last year’s average season ticket was $17.07. Excluding club seats, the Pirates’ top ticket price last year was $35 and general admission bleacher seats were $9.

Canseco sentenced

SAN DIEGO — Jose Canseco went to a Tijuana pharmacy looking for something to boost his testosterone level — low after years of admitted steroid use — and got himself in trouble again.

Limping slightly and saying he’s tired, depressed and nearly bankrupt, the former slugger pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor offense of trying to bring a fertility drug across the Mexican border. He was sentenced to 12 months’ unsupervised probation.

Canseco apologized to U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruben B. Brooks, saying, “I made an honest mistake.”

Options declined

DANA POINT, Calif. — The New York Yankees declined their 2009 options on first baseman Jason Giambi and pitcher Carl Pavano on Tuesday, making the pair eligible for free agency.

Giambi will receive a $5 million buyout rather than a $22 million salary next season, completing his $120 million, seven-year contract. Pavano gets a $1.95 million buyout instead of a $13 million salary, finishing his $39.95 million deal.

The 2000 AL MVP with Oakland, Giambi hit 209 homers during his time with the Yankees.
