Fire smoke claims life

YOUNGSTOWN — A pot left unattended on a stove caused a fire at 3620 Neilson Ave., and smoke inhalation claimed the life of John W. King, 60, who was found in a bedroom, the fire department said. Firefighters sent to the South Side house at 2:10 a.m. Saturday saw fire on the first floor, confined to the kitchen and dining room. Reports show that no smoke detectors were in the house. Damage to the house and contents was set at $25,000.

Firefighters were also sent to the scene of a cooking fire at 171 Brookline Ave. on the North Side at 7 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported. The owner told firefighters that she was preparing to cook chicken and left the stove unattended. Damage was set at $11,000 to the house and contents.

Also on the North Side, at 2241 Cordova Ave., the occupants were alerted by smoke detectors at 8 a.m. Sunday to a fire that started in the living room, and they got out safely. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and damage estimated at $24,000.

Al Jazeera to broadcast

LIBERTY— Al Jazeera, the international Arabic-English language television network, is to have a live remote broadcast at the Arab American Community Center of Greater Youngstown today for the election.

Eyad Abu-Rahma, formerly of Youngstown, who works for the network out of its Washington, D.C., office, was instrumental in getting Al Jazeera to the Mahoning Valley, said Ray Nakley, the community center’s spokesman.

The center is holding an election event beginning at 6 p.m. with food and beverages available. Admission is free. The center is at 15 Belgrade Ave. between Colonial Drive and Gypsy Lane.

The time for Al Jazeera’s broadcast will be after the event’s starting time, Nakley said.

National City Bank robbed

AUSTINTOWN— A man robbed National City Bank on Mahoning Avenue of an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police Chief Robert Gavalier said at about 12:30 p.m. Monday, the man, who was dressed in white tennis shoes, a white sweat shirt and a white ball cap, entered the bank and handed a note to the clerk, demanding money.

The man took the money and walked out of the front door of the bank. Witnesses said he headed east on Mahoning Avenue.
