Weekend fires in Youngstown; one man dies


YOUNGSTOWN — A pot left unattended on a stove caused a fire at 3620 Neilson Ave. and smoke inhalation claimed the life of John W. King, 60, who was found in a bedroom, the fire department said.

Firefighters sent to the South Side house at 2:10 a.m. Saturday saw fire on the first floor, confined to the kitchen and dining room. Reports show that no smoke detectors were present in the house. Damage to the house and contents was set at $25,000.

Firefighters were also sent to the scene of a cooking fire at 171 Brookline Ave. on the North Side at 7 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported. The owner told firefighters that she was preparing to cook chicken and left the stove unattended. Damage was set at $11,000 to the house and contents.

Also on the North Side, at 2241 Cordova Ave., the occupants were alerted by smoke detectors at 8 a.m. Sunday to a fire that started in the living room and they got out safely. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and damage estimated at $24,000.
