Body found after fire

YOUNGSTOWN — The body of a South Side man was found by firefighters after a neighbor called to report a fire in his kitchen.

Firefighters were called to 3206 Nielson Ave. just after 2 a.m. Saturday. The body of John King, 60, of Youngstown, was found unresponsive in a bedroom inside the house.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined and under investigation.

No one else was home at the time the fire started.

Campaign signs wanted

YOUNGSTOWN — After presidential-year elections, millions of yard signs are discarded and buried in landfills. The Mahoning County Green Team wants to put a stop to that and urges all candidates to gather their yard signs — the standard plastic or paperboard with metal posts — and bring them to the South Side Annex, 2801 Market St.

The Green Team requests the signs be neatly stacked against the fence in the annex’s rear parking lot. Do not bring large wooded or metal signs, just the standard yard signs. The county’s recycling division staff will not pick up political signs.

The metal posts and the plastic or paperboard are recyclable materials, and thus should not be discarded, said Jim Petuch, Green Team director.

$10K grant for Goodwill

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries received a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, through the Kennedy Family Foundation, to assist with capital needs.

The money will be used to replace the windows and blinds in the conference room, which is used for board, committee and staff meetings, client and employee orientation, staff training and meetings with customers including referral sources.

The room is not energy efficient because it is equipped with single-pane, steel-framed windows. These windows are original to the building and are more than 60 years old.

Any excess funds will be used to replace additional windows throughout the building.

This will begin the first phase in replacing all the windows in the building in an effort to become more energy efficient, officials said.
