NHL ROUNDUP \ Saturday’s games
Blackhawks 4, Blue Jackets 3, SO
COLUMBUS — Cristobal Huet stopped 48 shots and made Jonathan Toews’ goal in the shootout stand up to lead Chicago. The Blue Jackets peppered Huet with 51 shots, the second most in franchise history. Huet not only stopped 48 of them, he also batted away attempts by Kristian Huselius, Rick Nash and Jake Voracek in the shootout. Toews, up first in the shootout for the Blackhawks, hit a low shot off the left post that ricocheted into the net behind Columbus goaltender Fredrik Norrena. Patrick Sharp, Brent Seabrook and Martin Havlat had the Chicago goals, with Duncan Keith and Kris Versteeg adding two assists. R.J. Umberger and Fedor Tyutin scored their first goals in a Columbus uniform, with Huselius adding the tying goal with 7:52 left in regulation. Rookie Derick Brassard had two assists.
Canadiens 5, Islanders 4
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Alexei Kovalev’s second goal of the game with 4:41 left capped a four-goal third period for the Montreal Canadiens, who rallied to beat the New York Islanders 5-4 on Saturday night. Kovalev’s close-in shot beat Yann Danis, a goalie making his first NHL start in nearly three years, and gave the Canadiens their third straight win. Danis, the Islanders’ third-string goalie, could be in line for more action with regular backup Joey MacDonald because No. 1 netminder Rick DiPietro will be out four-to-six weeks following knee surgery on Friday. The Canadiens got two goals and two assists from Tomas Plekanec and one from Long Island native Christopher Higgins. Carey Price made 27 saves.
Maple Leafs 5, Rangers 2
TORONTO — Pavel Kubina’s hard slap shot with just over five minutes to play Saturday helped Toronto overcome another two-goal deficit and lifted the Maple Leafs. Rangers backup goalie Steve Valiquette appeared headed for his fourth straight win over the Maple Leafs until Toronto scored four times in a span of 3:30 of the third period to wrest the victory away from the NHL’s top team. New York fell to 10-3-1. John Mitchell scored twice in the Maple Leafs’ outburst.
Devils 6, Thrashers 1
NEWARK, N.J. — Martin Brodeur’s left elbow injury overshadowed the New Jersey Devils’ 6-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers. Brodeur, one of the most durable players in the NHL, left the game after bruising his elbow in the second period. Brodeur, eight wins shy of tying Patrick Roy’s NHL record of 551 career victories, had played every minute of New Jersey’s 10 games this season before he was hurt 6:38 into the second period. He did a split to make a sprawling stop, got up slowly clutching his left arm, and skated off the ice.
Sabres 5 Capitals 0
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ryan Miller stopped 29 shots for his eighth NHL shutout, Thomas Vanek scored twice for Buffalo. Vanek, who leads the league with 11 goals, posted his third multigoal game of the season. Derek Roy, Jason Pominville, and Daniel Paille also scored for Buffalo, which snapped a two-game losing streak during which they allowed 10 goals. Andrej Sekera had two assists for the first multipoint game of his NHL career.
Oilers 3, Hurricanes 1
RALEIGH, N.C. — Ethan Moreau scored two goals in the final 88 seconds for Edmonton. Moreau scored unassisted off the body of goalie Cam Ward to break a 1-all tie on Saturday and then added an empty-netter. Dwayne Roloson made 33 saves for the Oilers. Carolina thought it had tied the score with 43.1 seconds left when Eric Staal poked his own rebound toward the net. But replays showed Roloson covered the puck before it crossed the goal line. Ray Whitney scored for Carolina 6:35 into the first period and Ward stopped 29 shots.
