Film festival to show Almod ≥var’s ‘Volver’

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Jake Erhardt International Film Series will show the Spanish film “Volver” at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 in Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center at Westminster College. The event is free and open to the public.

“Volver” (2006), written and directed by Pedro Almod ≥var and starring Penelope Cruz, tells the story of a mother who returns to her home town after her death to fix situations she couldn’t resolve during her life.

“Volver” (“To Return”) won many awards, including best actress for Cruz at the Cannes Film Festival.

Western Reserve PBS plans digital open house

KENT — Western Reserve PBS (formerly PBS 45/49) will hold a free DTV open house from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at its main office, 1750 Campus Center Drive. Attendees can get information about digital television, see demonstrations on converter box hook-ups, get help ordering converter box coupons, and ask questions about antenna.

Western Reserve PBS will convert digital broadcasting Nov. 21. The rest of the country will switch on Feb. 17.

‘Guys & Dolls’ show

Dana Flute Ensemble plans free concert

YOUNGSTOWN — The Dana Flute Ensemble, under the direction of Kathryn Thomas Umble, will perform a free concert at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Bliss Recital Hall.

The Youngstown State University ensemble performs works for the whole ensemble as well as smaller chamber music combinations.

Umble is assistant professor of flute at YSU. In addition to performing principal flute with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, Umble holds the piccolo position with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and has performed principal flute with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.

Bliss Recital Hall is in YSU’s Bliss Hall, on Wick Avenue, across from the Butler Institute of American Art. Concert-goers can park for $5 in the Wick Avenue parking deck.

Jann Klose performance

YOUNGSTOWN — Singer-songwriter Jann Klose will play at Therese’s Great Nights, Peace House, 204 Broadway Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13. Artisans sought

EAST LIVERPOOL — Appalachian Cottage Industries is seeking vendors who offer handmade items for a Christmas gifts. The non-profit organization is sponsoring an artisans show 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 in the Slak Shak of Kent State University’s Main Building, 400 E. Fourth St.
