YOUNGSTOWN — The Salvation Army, Mahoning County Area Services, 1501 Glenwood Ave., will have its second-chance Christmas assistance sign-ups from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 2-4. Applicants must provide valid photo identification; have Social Security cards for everyone in the household; have proof of guardianship for children 12 years and younger through medical or insurance cards, court papers, document from Job and Family Services or birth certificates; and show that household income is 200 percent of federal poverty level and be willing to sign an income verification form.

Children 12 and younger and newborns born before Jan. 1, 2009, will receive a toy. Singles, senior citizens, couples and families with all children older than 12 years old will receive food vouchers. Applicants may only sign up with one agency or church for Christmas assistance. No phone calls or phone applications will be accepted.

Free Thanksgiving meal

YOUNGSTOWN — The public is invited to a free Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave. No identification or proof of income are required.

Basket Extravaganza

WARREN — Trumbull Mobile Meals, in conjunction with the Trumbull County Medical Society Alliance, will have its second annual Basket Extravaganza at 6 p.m. Saturday at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. N.W.

More than $18,000 worth of merchandise will be available through a Chinese raffle, a silent auction or a live auction.

Hors d’oeuvres and entertainment will be provided. Proceeds will defray the cost of home-delivered meals to people who cannot afford the full cost. The event is open to the public.

Cost for Mobile Meals volunteers is $25 per person or $45 per couple. The cost for nonvolunteers is $35 per person or $65 per couple.

Volunteer applications

BOARDMAN — Akron Children’s Hospital’s Beeghly Campus, scheduled to open in early December, is accepting applications for its Volunteer Program. Volunteers are needed seven days a week to help staff the reception desk, greet visitors, staff the gift shop and assist with directions, mail delivery and patient transport. Shifts begin at 8 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and out of high school, and able to commit to three to four hours a week for a minimum of one year.
