Stalemate continues at American Standard

SALEM — The management representatives of American Standard Brands said they are disappointed that a meeting between officials of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 1538, and its membership on Wednesday did not change anything.

The union went on strike Oct. 17 but met Wednesday at the high school to discuss the terms of the company’s offer.

“We are disappointed that the union has now had a concrete, fair proposal for almost a month and they have yet to take it to the work force for a vote,” said Paul Lee, manager of the Salem plant.

Union officials did not return calls for comment Friday.

The company said in a statement that it now believes the strike could be drawn out. It plans to have an informational meeting with the union bargaining committee to share its plans to ensure continuity of products to its customers.

The meeting is set to take place about 1 p.m. Wednesday. A location has not been picked.

The company’s offer calls for pay and benefit cuts but it includes incentives.

The company again said that workers who want to return under the proposed agreement can call (330) 332-9954, ext. 280.
