MLB ROUNDUP Friday’s other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Rays 2, White Sox 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Cliff Floyd lined a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning for Tampa Bay. Floyd’s fourth homer of the season came against Scott Linebrink (2-1). It ended a stretch in which the White Sox bullpen had not allowed an earned run in 28 innings.
Rangers 3, Athletics 1
ARLINGTON, Texas — Kevin Millwood allowed one run through six innings in his first start in almost three weeks and rookie Brandon Boggs matched a career high with three RBIs for Texas. Millwood (3-3) gave up five hits, struck out five and didn’t issue a walk in his first start since May 10 against Oakland. He was forced to leave that outing due to a strained right groin after throwing 12 pitches and recording two outs.
Yankees 6, Twins 5
MINNEAPOLIS — Bobby Abreu tripled twice and scored all four times he reached base, backing Mike Mussina and igniting New York’s rally past Minnesota. Abreu tied his career high with those four runs, helping Mussina (8-4) overcome a four-run first inning for his seventh win in eight starts. Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and Melky Cabrera each had three hits and two RBIs for further support.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Phillies 12, Marlins 3
PHILADELPHIA — Chase Utley hit his major league-leading 18th homer to help Brett Myers win for the first time in six weeks. Ryan Howard and Chris Coste each had three-run shots for the Phillies, who won their fifth straight game and moved into first place in the NL East — a half-game ahead of the surprising Marlins.
Dodgers 9, Mets 5
NEW YORK — Russell Martin went 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs, and Los Angeles took advantage of a blown call at first base to rally past the Mets. After prized prospect Clayton Kershaw was chased in the fourth inning of his second major league start, Chan Ho Park (2-1) shut down the Mets to give manager Joe Torre a victory in his return to New York.
Reds 3, Braves 2, 11 innings
CINCINNATI — Rookie Jay Bruce had four hits and scored on Chipper Jones’ error in the 11th inning. Bruce added to his remarkable debut week with three hits off 300-game winner Tom Glavine. He then opened the 11th with a single off Royce Ring. Bruce is 8-for-14 in his first four games.
Brewers 5, Astros 1
MILWAUKEE — Ryan Braun homered and matched a career-high with four hits and Manny Parra pitched six strong innings for Milwaukee. Prince Fielder and Mike Cameron also homered for Milwaukee, which won for the fourth time in five games. Houston dropped its third straight.
Cubs 10, Rockies 9
CHICAGO — Jim Edmonds and Mark DeRosa delivered key hits and Chicago overcame an eight-run deficit for their fifth straight victory. Down 8-0 in the fourth inning still trailing 9-1 in the sixth, the Cubs came back and sent Colorado to its fifth loss in a row.
