Bass tournament to benefit United Way

BOARDMAN — O’Charley’s, the new “good food and good fun” restaurant that opened recently in the township, is title sponsor of this year’s pro-am bass tournament benefiting the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way. The ninth annual tournament will be known as O’Charley’s Bass Classic, and is scheduled for today at Aqua Ohio’s Pine and Evans lakes. More than 40 teams of professional bass anglers and their amateur partners will compete for cash and prizes on the bass-filled reservoirs.

This year’s event will feature Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Joe Thomas, an avid fisherman.

Additional major sponsorship is being provided this year by Dick’s Sporting Goods and Lowe’s.

Organizers project they’ll cross the $100,000 threshold in money raised for the support of agencies that benefit from Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way.

The public can participate in several ways — through entering and competing, by enjoying the free Lowe’s Kids Fish Fun Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and by attending the tournament weigh-in starting after 2 p.m. Both the Fish and Fun event and the weigh-in will take place in the parking lot between the Dick’s and Lowe’s stores on South Avenue in Boardman.

The competition pits top pro bass anglers paired with amateur anglers who make a donation to the United Way. For many of the amateurs, it is their best opportunity to fish from a tournament-rigged bass boat operated by an experienced angler who shares the ins-and-outs of bass fishing. Prizes will be awarded for total weight and big bass after the tournament weigh-in.

Well supported by area businesses and professional people, this year’s tournament is expected to raise more than $15,000 for local programs and services supported by the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way.

Corporate sponsors of the United Way Bass Classic include: O’Charley’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lowe’s, Aqua Ohio, Whispering Pines Village, Harrington, Hoppe Mitchell law firm, Pipelines, and Sensus Metering Systems.
