Chaney student assaults teacher

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — A 16-year-old Chaney High School student was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after she assaulted a substitute teacher. The substitute had confiscated the girl’s cellular phone during class, and at the end of the class period the girl attempted to grab the phone off the substitute’s desk — resulting in a struggle.

The teacher said she put her hand over the phone and initially kept the student from getting it, but the student tried again and eventually got the phone back.

The substitute teacher tried to call for help and keep the student from leaving the room, but the girl shoved her out of the way of the door. The victim had minor injuries.

The student was found by police officers near the gymnasium doors and taken to the school office, where she and her mother were informed that she would be taken into police custody. She is charged with assault on a teacher and was taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.
