Rohans sparkle on field

Three members of the Rohan family — brothers Greg and George III and cousin Eddie — enjoyed outstanding college baseball seasons this year.

Greg Rohan, junior first baseman for Kent State from South Range High, was named Mid-American Conference player of the year and selected to the All-MAC first team for the second year in a row.

Greg led the MAC in homers (20) and slugging percentage (,772) and was second in RBIs (61) and total bases (152). He also led Kent State in doubles (17) while batting .355 (70-197) with 50 runs scored.

Kent State made it to the MAC tournament final for the third straight year, losing to Eastern Michigan last Saturday, 12-4.

Greg was selected to the all-tournament team.

The Golden Flashes (36-21, 16-8 MAC) shared first place with Bowling Green in the regular season standings.

George, Eddie set marks at Findlay, Winthrop

George Rohan III, a senior pitcher-outfielder on the University of Findlay baseball team from South Range High, had a record-breaking year and was selected to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team and the All-North Central Region second team.

He set the school record for total bases (111), and tied the school standard for homers (8), and ranks in the top five in seven career batting categories.

He also led the team in RBIs (44) and runs scored (43) while batting .348 (63-181) with 18 doubles.

Greg and George III are the sons of George and Geralyn Rohan of North Lima.

Eddie Rohan, a freshman designated hitter, catcher and outfielder for Winthrop University from Youngstown and Ursuline High, set the school record for home runs by a freshman with 13, which ranked No. 3 in the Big South.

Eddie, the son of Ed and J. Anne Rohan, was selected to the All-Big South second team.

Eddie also led Winthrop in slugging percentage (.536) and total bases (112) and was third in RBIs (37). He batted .287 (60-for-209) with 33 runs scored and 13 doubles.

Winthrop (26-34, 11-10 Big South) is coached by Joe Hudak, a native of New Castle.

Poland’s Yost caps career on title team

Dave Yost, a senior right-handed pitcher for the Mount Vernon Nazarene College baseball team from Poland High, capped his career by helping the Cougars (39-21) win the National Christian Conference Athletic Association national tournament championship for the sixth time.

Mount Vernon Nazarene won the tournament last Saturday with an 8-3 win over Indiana Wesleyan at Cene Park

Although Yost didn’t get to pitch in the final, he finished the season with a 3-0 record in seven appearances, including five starts, over 27 innings. He also had a 4.67 ERA with10 strikeouts and 12 walks.
