Driver charged with vehicular homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — The intoxicated driver whose passenger died after a collision with a cement truck two weeks ago has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, said City Prosecutor Jay Macejko.

The warrant was issued Wednesday for Humes A. Gregory Jr., 47, of East Lucius Avenue. Once arrested, Gregory will be arraigned in municipal court.

Macejko said Gregory was intoxicated at the time of the May 15 crash and was driving with a suspended license. The crash happened around 3:40 p.m. on the city’s South Side.

If convicted of the felony, Gregory faces three to 10 years in prison, the prosecutor said.

Gregory, who was traveling south on Glenwood Avenue, thought he could beat the cement truck and turned in front of it near Midlothian Boulevard, police said. His passenger, Amir Fareer, 43, of Youngstown, died after the car collided with the truck that had been traveling north on Glenwood.

Municipal court records show Gregory was found guilty of driving under suspension last November. He was sentenced to five days in jail and 40 hours’ community service and placed on nine months’ probation.
