Berndt becomes Penguin golfer

YOUNGSTOWN — Canfield High School senior Jamie Berndt has signed a letter of intent to join the YSU golf team in the fall.

Berndt was named to the First Team All-Metro Athletic Conference and was picked Second-Team All-Northeast Ohio.

As a junior Berndt helped guide the Cardinals to an appearance at the state tournament where she placed in 51st with a two-round total of 185 (93-92).

Berndt was also the recipient of the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation Scholarship.

Thiel players selected

GREENVILLE, Pa. — David Nypaver and Dan Morrison, junior outfielders for the Thiel College baseball team, have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Baseball team Tuesday.

Nypaver (Howland High) was recognized on the second team while Morrison (Maplewood) was named to the third team.

Nypaver, who previously was selected to the 2008 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-Mideast Region and the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference second teams, had Thiel’s top batting average (.428), which ranked No. 4 in school history for one season. He also had five home runs, 42 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

A secondary education and history major, Nypaver also was named to the Dean’s List six times.

Morrison batted .377 in 43 games and 39 starts to go along with 40 runs scored and 26 RBIs.

Rouan to Geneva

AUSTINTOWN — Fitch High senior Rachel Rouan will attend Geneva College where she will play basketball.

Rouan was picked the MVP of the Fitch basketball team as a junior and as a senior and was picked to the all-Federal League second team.

Tressel book signings

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — Tyndale House Publishers announced that Ohio State Univ. football coach Jim Tressel will participate in eight book signings for “The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life”.

Co-written with Chris Fabry, “The Winners Manual” will be released July 15.

Ryan resigns MISL

WESTPORT, Conn. — Steve Ryan resigned Tuesday as commissioner and chief executive officer of the Major Indoor Soccer League, a job he held since 2000.

A committee will oversee the league until a new commissioner is chosen. The 10-team league plays a fall-to-spring schedule.

Ryan sited “differing opinions” among owners regarding the direction of the league.

NYON, Switzerland — Porto could lose its place in next season’s European Champions League because of a bribery scandal.

The Union of European Football Associations said Tuesday it is considering barring the Portuguese league champion, which was penalized six points in the standings as the result of an investigation into bribing referees during the 2003-04 season.
