Honored YSU professor dies after illness

WEXFORD, Pa. — Dr. William A. Wood, 56, professor and director of the School of Technology at Youngstown State University, died Tuesday at his home in McCandless Township, Pa., after an extended illness.

He held a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering from Cornell University and a Ph.D. and MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a multiyear recipient of the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers honor.

He was an Eagle Scout and a Scoutmaster in Troop 329 and was involved in the Catholic Ministries at St. Alexis Church and a member of the Masonry Society.

Among others, he leaves his wife, the former Mary Lynn Wityk, to whom he was married for 30 years; sons Alex, Nathan and Steve; and a sister, Lynda Freyler.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the George A. Thoma Funeral Home Inc., 10418 Perry Highway, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Alexis Church.
