Names and backgrounds of 19 village residents who died serving their country


During Monday’s annual Memorial Day program, Mayor Glenn Holmes read the names and backgrounds of 19 village residents who died serving their country. They are:

Garfield Bequeath: Member of the 85th Mountain Regiment of the 10th Infantry. Killed in action on or about April 16, 1945, on the Italian Front.

John Black: Air Force flight officer, 20th Bomb Squad, 2nd Bomber Group. Was the navigator on a B-17 bomber that left Italy on a mission to Germany and was shot down on or about March 22, 1945.

Mark Bokan: A private first class and member of the 40th Transportation Carrier Squad, 317th Carrier Group, stationed in Matushima, Japan. Died Oct. 19, 1947, during the Occupation of Japan.

Richard Clifford: A Helmsman 3rd Class attached to the USS Pollus AKS3. Served in the Navy before losing his life in a vehicular accident Oct. 2, 1957, while on duty in California.

William Flere: PFC in the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Division of the Army. Died during fighting in Normandy on June 25, 1944.

Henry Galbreath: PFC with the 55th Infantry Battalion of the 11th Armored Division who was killed in action on or near Jan. 22, 1945.

John Headd: A 1st Lieutenant with the 7th Army who was an Infantry Company Commander. Killed in action on or close to March 30, 1956, in France.

Dennis Johnson: Died in a battle in Vietnam on or about April 16, 1968.

George Kuchick Jr.: Army Corporal who fought in Europe and was listed as missing in action Jan. 2, 1945; listed as killed in action roughly two months later.

Harold Lisdel: Flight officer with the 203rd Army Air Force who died in a midair collision April 12, 1944, over Kansas.

Donald May: PFC with the Combat Engineers of the 3rd Army in Europe. Died in combat on or near March 26, 1944.

Douglas McFalls: PFC, 101st Airborne Division. Died in a vehicular accident March 24, 1967, in Fort Campbell, Ky., after returning from Vietnam.

Edward Miller: A sergeant with the 1st Calvary, Army Engineers who was stationed in Korea. He and three other servicemen drowned in 1950.

Vernon Nock: A private with the 1st Marine Division who died in the battle for Okinawa on or near May 9, 1945, at age 17.

Albert Plecha: An Air Force 1st Lieutenant attached to the 310th Fighter Bomber Squadron who was killed on a mission over Korea on or about Sept. 10, 1952.

John Scarbrough: Army PFC, 104th Infantry Regiment of the 20th Division, who was killed on or near Nov. 26, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge in Europe.

Albert Sikora: A Staff Sergeant with the Occupational Forces in Europe. Killed in Belgium in November 1945.

Matthew Vinkovich: Army member who died of nonbattle wounds in England, date unknown.

George Vukelich: Served in the Army and died during the invasion of France at Normandy in June 1944.
