Illinois-Chicago wins another Horizon title


NILES — Brett Schaefer rapped five hits and drove in four runs as the University of Illinois-Chicago rolled to a 16-3 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sunday at Eastwood Field.

Schaefer spearheaded a 22-hit attack against six pitchers in the championship game of the Horizon League Baseball Tournament.

Chicago (34-19) won its second straight Horizon League meet title and fourth in the last six years.

Milwaukee advanced to Sunday’s final with a pair of wins Saturday, first over Valparaiso (8-3) and then over Chicago (7-2).

Schaefer had a double and four singles while Brandon Harwell added a home run, double and four RBIs and Kevin Coddington a double, single and two RBIs, to aid Chicago’s strong offensive show Sunday.

Jason Ganek contributed a double, single and one RBI to reinforce the Flames, while Steve McGuiggan added four singles, Ty Rubio a double and single and Jake Carr two singles.

The Flames scored five runs in the first inning and four in the second to jump out to a 9-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Peter Ifft gained the win with relief help from Adam Worthington in the ninth inning, They combined to pitch a nine-hitter.

Nick Wichser had two singles and one RBI to lead Milwaukee (24-36).
