Historical Society to present annual awards

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s 133rd Annual meeting and historic preservation awards ceremony will be June 17 in the Christman Room at Stambaugh Auditorium.

The awards honor those in Mahoning and Trumbull counties who take an active role in preserving historic buildings, sites and districts.

This year’s awards will be given for rehabilitation of the 1895 Suspension Bridge on Valley Drive in Mill Creek Park in Youngstown; restoration of the 1843 Moss Ancestral Home in Mineral Ridge; restoration of the 1927 Tod Cemetery Mausoleum in Youngstown; and revitalization of the 1930 Wick Pollock Inn Sunken Gardens in Youngstown. Soap Box Derby

NEW CASTLE. Pa. — The New Castle Soap Box Derby will be Saturday at Scotland Meadows Park in Union Township. Racing will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 2 p.m. For more information, contact Mark Mroczynski at (724) 774-1762.

Protecting your identity

MERCER, Pa. — U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd, has arranged an informational session on how people can avoid identity theft. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Woodland Place, 745 Greenville Road.

English will be joined by Derick Rill, an expert from the Federal Trade Commission, who will teach local residents how they can better protect their personal and financial information.SFlbFree boat checks

Boaters are can have their vessels checked for free at a number of locations this May and June.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering complimentary inspections to keep boaters safe and help them avoid citations. Points of inspection will include basic mechanics, registration and safety devices. The Coast Guard Auxiliary does not fine or report violations, but will inform boaters on how to comply with state and federal laws.

The checks will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at these locations: Berlin Lake Mill Creek Campgrounds, today; Mosquito Lake State Park, Saturday and Sunday; and West Branch State Park, June 7 and 8. Call (330) 638-5998 for more information.

History-to-Go event

The Young Leaders Advisory Board of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society plans its next History-to-Go event titled “The Valley’s Garden: 50 Years in the Making” for 6 to 8 p.m. June 12 at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Youngstown.

The event will include a tour of the garden focused on its history and its future. Afterward, a cocktail party with live music will be at the D.D Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center.
